On
May 15, 2003 we left Las Vegas, NV bound for Alaska. Our home for
the next 5 months was Mammoth - our 35 foot Safari motorhome. We
towed a Honda CRV and carried a 12 foot fold up Porta-Boat on top.
By the time we arrived back home we had traveled over 9000 miles
through some incredible scenery. We caught salmon and halibut, saw
lots of wildlife including an up close and personal encounter with
some grizzly bears, flew over the summit of Mt. McKinley and watched
a calving glacier from our kayak only 40 ft. away.
This web site contains newsletters we wrote every few days on the
trip. Pressing the Past Newsletters button will take you to the
list of newsletters organized by place and date. Each newsletter
will contain thumbnail size pictures from that area. If you click
on the picture, you can see a full screen view of it. Or if you
just want to browse a gallery of all the photos from the trip, click
on the Photo button.
Each newsletter also has a link to a page of travel statistics
for that part of the route, including mileage, route taken, weather,
road conditions and campground info. That's for those of you who
may be thinking of making this trip in the future.
And there's a map of northern Canada and Alaska which has a plot
of our route.
We hope you enjoy reading about our experiences and encourage anyone
contemplating a similar trip to go for it!
