On November 19, 2015, we flew from Las Vegas to Yangon, Myanmar
(formerly Rangoon, Burma). This was the start of a tour with Overseas
Adventure Travel (OAT). This was our second tour with OAT (the first
was to Iceland and Greenland). We really like the fact that they
take a maximum of 16 people on their trips and they immerse you
in the culture of the places you visit. A portion of the profit
from every OAT trip goes to Grand Circle foundation, which gives
back to the places we visit, especially to the schools.
This trip was appropriately called Ancient Kingdoms as we explored
sites from the ancient kingdoms of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia
and Vietnam. In addition to seeing extraordinary architectural wonders,
we had some amazing experiences participating in the daily lives
and activities of the people in the villages. It was also amazing
that in 30 days, after 15 flights, 10 different hotels in 5 different
countries. we had no glitches in our travels.
SE Asia is a fascinating place to visit with cultures so different
from ours. The people were friendly, food was delicious and healthy
(we didn't see any fat Asians!). In addition to our bus and plane
rides, we took 17 different modes of local transportation! We visited
families and a school, shopped in local markets and saw hundreds
of pagodas and temples. OAT promises an immersion in the cultures
of the countries they visit and that promise was kept.
