After
our tour of Pompeii, we checked into our hotel for the next two
nights. The Grand Hotel La Pace was indeed grand - one of the most
elegant of our trip. The public rooms were filled with huge glass
pieces. Our
room was covered with bright yellow tile (a tradition of Sorrento)
and overlooked the pool area. We lounged around the hotel and pool
for a few hours, then left for a walk through the downtown area.
First
stop was an inlaid wood factory and showroom. We were given a demonstration
of the many steps it takes to create a piece of inlaid wood. No
wonder it is a dying art. The showroom had all kinds of pieces to
buy, from musical jewelry boxes to pictures to furniture. We
had purchased one of the music boxes when we were in Sorrento 20
years earlier so we didn't succumb to the temptations. They sure
have increased in price since then!
We
continued on to the old town area and wandered down the shopping
streets until dinner time.
Dinner was at Restorante Parrucchiano Favorita, a huge and beautiful
restaurant. It felt like we were dining outside due to the hundreds
of plants and fruit trees throughout the multi-level restaurant.
And the food was delicious starting with the traditional antipasti,
all the wine we wanted, pasta, main entree and ending with a wonderful
dessert. Thank goodness this dinner was included in the tour as
it probably cost a pretty euro!
